Re: Choosing a type iv throwable PFD

A MOB pile is actually extremely quick & convenient to deploy when properly mounted. On a normal backstay mount, it is only held in place by gravity, with the base inserted in a tube and the top of the pole loosely restrained in a tube. Lift, drop, and it is deployed.

With a split backstay that can be impossible, but laying it alongside the aft gunnel or rail with two velcro straps makes it almost as fast. In either case, yes, there's usually some extra tie-down possible for storm conditions, etc.

Velcro is a good way to attach any MOB device. Rubber bands, that can literally be broken if you pull the device itself, also work well although they do degrade with UV. But for something like a weekend or week event--they're quick & easy too.

Jammer-
I can appreciate the math. I wonder if you could invite the USCGAux or USPS to come to a local club, etc. and give a class in your area, since there is such a local lack of those things? Maybe do one in April or May before summer starts?
