South African Debbie Calitz and Italian Bruno Pelizzari have been freed by Somali pirates, after 20 months captivity:
Pelizzari told reporters the release followed a negotiated settlement, but did not say if a ransom had been paid. The pirate gang initially demanded $10 million from the pair’s families. The ransom demand dropped as low as $500,000 in March last year, according to a blog set up to highlight their plight, but was raised again as negotiations stumbled.
Armed pirates hijacked their yacht “Choizil” in October 2010 as it was about to enter the Mozambique channel south of the Tanzanian port city of Dar es Salaam.
