This has come up before. One recommendation was find used standard bikes with old fashoned fat tires. You won't feel the pinch if they are pinched and if they get to rusty its no loss. Take them to a bike shop and get quick release stuff for the wheels. They get pretty small with the wheels off.

Yep, small wheeled.

As I say, fine for just me, but Oz is not well set up for cruisers (except perhaps East Coast), so 1 or 2 kms for provisions/fuel/water is not uncommon.
