Re: Best Handheld GPS

Have Tides(activecaptain) and Charts (earthnc) on my iPhone & ipad for backup on the C120 Ray chartplotter. I always use the C120, but also double check the others to test the accuracy of the C120. These apps are cheap and very useful.

My idea of a backup is something that can be relied upon to work in adverse conditions. That means AA battery powered, waterproof, and robust. A smartphone scores poorly on all 3 counts.

I have a Garmin GPSMap 76Cx. I use paper charts for the big picture, the small screen works for me. The unit runs all day on 2 AA batteries, I use rechargeables.

Re: Best Handheld GPS

If you don't mind something fixed on a panel, you could get a nice fixed mount vhf marine radio with GPS function
