Best Emergancy Insurance /Medivac if fully insured in US

What is the best, and what is the cheapest, and what is the most cost effective medical Emergancy only insurance including medi-vac to the US if long term care needed for all of us who are insured or have Medicare in the US. DAN requires it to be a diving accident. Is there a sailboat equivalent? Longer than 60 Days outside the of US, no Medicare coverage. Cost of minor medical things abroad are cheaper than most deductibles, but a major problem and I want the option to be stablized and flown back. Most insurance leave you cold day one. But I don't want to get a major policy for emergancies only. Suggestions?????

No, actually, DAN doesn't require it to be a diving accident, they've been most generous about that, as long as you are +50 miles from home. They've managed to say they do and don't require diving so many times that they make Hillary look good.

But DAN now offers BOATERS insurance, the same basic great medevac policy sold and targeted to BOATERS with no diving involved. Give 'em a call to find out more.

Thank you. I see that Dan has an annual plan and the travel assist which is included in membership. I will call to see what they offer cruisers.

DAN has a plan for non-diving travel assistance.

If you are employed in the US it's possible your employer has a travel assistance plan. A lot of employers have this as part of their business insurance and don't know it. So ask the HR person to look into it.

When I looked at DAN, the travel assistance wasn't repatriation, but only transport to the nearest facility which could address the issue of the moment.

That's good, but better, if you're insured in the US, would be to a center where your issues have specialized experience.

MHO, YMMV

A second for DAN. Another to consider but with a hog charge is the AMEX platinum card which guarantees medivac costs . I know first hand that all the Air Ambulances will respond to it.

Look at AAA roadside insurance. They offer emergency evacuation to home if you are over seas: "Emergency Medical Transportation coverage (worldwide)- $25,000"

If you happen to be a veteran, the VFW sponsors this plan that is very comprehensive and affordable. I haven't had to use it, (knock on wood!) but have traveled to both Russia and Vietnam in the past year and a half and was assured I had complete coverage.

I guess that the hog charge would cover Flying Pig...

Re: Best Emergancy Insurance /Medivac if fully insured in US

DAN has been known to be most generous about their transport decisions. (And always taking your companion/caregiver.)
For instance, a couple of years back one of the cruise lines had a bus tour up in the mountains in Columbia(?) and the bus went over the side. The nearest Category 1 Trauma Center was Jackson Ryder, in MIAMI. So that's where they got taken to.
I've no idea where the nearest Cat1 is to Fiji or Tahiti...but in the Med or the EU or the Middle East, there are plenty of world-class cities (London, Paris, Rome, Tel-Aviv) where the same level of service is available, with English speaking staff, and certainly twelve hours closer than the US for medical treatment.
Just beware any group that offers a great policy--but won't let you see the policy until after you have signed up. Having 30 days to cancel it, is nice but not the same as comparing up front.
The "ultra-luxe" evac company is probably Global Assist, who will respond with armed force if necessary to get your butt out of troubles of many kinds, all over the world. You might want the Amex Black card for that one though.

I'm sure it costs but -
some years ago a friend of mine had his daughter medevaced from the middle of nowhere China to Miami. After being stabilized in China she was airlifted to a major airport and flown to Miami. She was accompanied by an RN for the duration of the trip. Every time they had a layover of more than 6 hours (IIRC) they got a hotel room. This was all arranged very quickly and efficiently, and there was no charge to my friend.
As I said, I'm sure the AMEX medevac policy costs, but the service is priceless.
And I don't even have an AMEX card.

Does anyone have experience with a prepaid jet transfer service such as SkyMed?

Here is the link to DAN Boat:

https://danboater.org/index.html

I don't have it yet, but it looks like the DAN for divers on first look.

Found the Dan for boaters-- danboaters.org. Best kept secret on the Internet, but it looks good to me now that I found it. Includes search and rescue at sea.
