Smuggling sounds fun but still far more likely directly related to the owner hiding the boat from the ex or sinking it for the insurance.

Gord : Like the fella's who run that web site, I too was once a member of IAMI and have taken all of their courses. They make a valiant effort and they are trying to educate Law Enforcement Agencies on stolen boats I.D. and recovery.

IAMI was in fact started by a Florida cop and many of it's members are officers with an interest in boating but the upper level admin really are not interested for many reasons. Why the underwriters do not bother to publish a list is beyond me as that could be much more comprehensive with little effort.

There is no central database for stolen boats as our police agencies have never put one together. Unless an incident makes the papers or there happens to be IAMI officer in that particular station it will never make the list. I have been involved in several larger boat thefts in Ontario that have never made it to the IAMI list and I am aware of many more smaller vessel thefts.

I may be wrong on my numbers (it's been a long time) but I believe IAMI once taught that if your car was stolen you had an 80% chance of recovery. If your boat was stolen it was 4%.
Bottom line ....... the numbers are simply not known.

No stats, just a thorough search. Are you suggesting there has been a string of stolen yachts in the area?

Small open boats and outboards are stolen with some frequency, but we are talking about large and or expensive yachts here.

I did the same thing initially and my first thought was I expected that theft, why are they surprised?

53 Hatteras, 360 Sea Ray, 34' custom are three I have been involved with and I am only one of 250 people doing this type of work.

Re: 41' Searay Stolen from Downtown Kingston Marina

Been involved with? As a surveyor? There are 250 surveyors in Ontario investigating stolen yachts? Interesting. And you imply I'm vague about citing statistics.

Is this suggesting since you investigated 3 unrecovered yacht disappearances x 250 surveyors= 750 yachts have disappeared from Ontario since 2012? If that's the case I had better mine the entrance to my yacht club because they'll be coming for my 36 year old stick boat next.

Who's involved in shipping this volume of yachts to over seas destinations? Russian organized crime? Is it the boys from Akwasasne? One of Rob Fords Crack slinging buddies? Surely with that kind of volume of theft somebody knows something?

Do they trailer them down the 401? I know a 53' Hatteras won't fit in a TEU or even a double size, so how do they get them out of the country?

I'm not suggesting anything other than that there are no reliable statistics on this issue. I asked you about the sources of your "thorough research". How about you answer that question rahter than getting childishly snarkey.

Re: 41' Searay Stolen from Downtown Kingston Marina

There were 5,181 watercraft thefts in the United States in 2014, down 6 percent from 2013 (which was also down 6% from 2012), according to an analysis of federal government data by the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
Of these thefts, 2,140, or 41 percent, were recovered by May 30, 2015. Jet skis (personal watercraft) were the most frequently stolen watercraft, with 1,121 thefts, followed by runabouts (755), utility boats (325), cruisers (186) and sailboats (49).

Re: 41' Searay Stolen from Downtown Kingston Marina

This comes up frequently on CF, people request statistical proof of something that is so rare that its statistically insignificant and yet are unwilling to support their argument to the contrary because- there are no statistics on it because its statistically insignificant.

I believe organized crime is not operating a yacht theft ring on Lake Ontario because the logistical challenges of exporting a 40+ ft yacht via the St Lawrence Seaway or Ontario or New York State highways would make the operation unprofitable when compared to Coastal Regions. The fact that statistics don't exist does more to support my belief than to contradict it.

Like I said, I can't find evidence to suggest such a ring exists, I have no statistics to support my belief, I am open to evidence to the contrary.

You mentioned 3 yacht thefts over the last 3 years, no doubt the owners/underwriters would like the yachts returned. Do you have names or registration numbers so we can search them on CPIC?

Exactly

You stated you had done thorough research of boat thefts in Ontario. With an interest in this area I simply asked the source of your research. I have done much research in this area over the years including joining IAMI and taking all their courses and have never found any reliable or complete data. If you have found data that I have not, I'd like to see it.
