Signed with alacrity.

Re: WWV / WWVH Petition

Closing down WWV is right in there with the closure - and destruction of broadcast towers - of LORAN. It is a huge mistake as we will have a single point of failure - GPS satellites - which are vulnerable to solar flares as well as hostile acts and accidents. (We should have updated LORAN to eLORAN to provide a secondary, terrestial system.) Without WWV how will we get accurate time for celestial in the event of GPS failure? Going to petition...

Re: WWV / WWVH Petition

WWV/WWVH are more than time checks. They are frequency standards, wx info, other info, propagation checks and more. I've signed!

The Navlist folks have been discussing this and the budget still has funding for WWVB as I understand it.

You are quite right. The Navy went from a phase out of celestial navigation to teaching it once again.

Why them? It is the House that controls the purse.

Not exactly.

Section 7 of the U.S. Constitution:

"All bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives, but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills."

Which is to say that Senate approval is still required for the final bill, and they have a role in amending revenue bills. But this is not a revenue raising bill, it would be a bill for authorizing expenditure or possibly a budget bill. So the Senate is a more-or-less equal partner.

Representatives individually have little control. Senators have a much greater presence with the administration. I want them to know this is a sore topic. And communicate it to the White House budget makers.

And WWV transmissions aren't "vulnerable to solar flares and terrorism"?

A better question is why spend millions of dollars for a system which 1. Should be privatized and 2. Serves a benefit to only a handful of people?

Government dependence should be a career goal.

How would WWV work as a privatized system? How do you make a profit broadcasting a time signal?

Clearly, the claim WWV broadcasts aren't subject to solar flare or other geomagnetic propagation anomalies is disingenuous. In answer to your question, W1AW, which is the callsigns of the ARRL, currently broadcasts on numerous frequencies throughout the day/night and isn't supported by tax revenue. There are multiple other alternatives equally or arguably more effective.

And that relates to my question how?
