I got this many years ago. It's essentially the Pilot Charts and a rudimentary weather-routing package using simple polar performance data. It might give you a reasonable first cut at a potential route, and will tell you what the conditions might be along the calculated path.

It knows *nothing* about actual weather, just the historical average pilot chart data, so you will probably find that your actual route and speed will be significantly different.

I would consider it an interesting sanity check for a proposed passage, but not much more than that. It's educational, but not all that practical.

I have recently purchased it. First time I cruised in the Pacific I used the paper pilot charts.

I find the reporting from VPP 2.00 excellent as you can get a summary of likely time & distance for proposed routes......something very difficult to do using paper.

One issue with both the charts & VPP2 is that they dont advise typhoon, cyclone, hurricane seasons per se, so you still need to be aware if your intended route goes through any areas of seasonal tropical storms. I believe Digital wave (owners of VPP2 software) are considering adding some statitical advice around this in the future releases.

all up i thought $120 was pretty good value, and any support questions i have asked have been answered very quickly,

PS what i meant to say in the reporting is that you get time & distance with wind direction, so easy to see if you have plotted a route that will be a bash to windward.....as noted, based on average data collected over a long time.....

Not that useful for Passage MAKING but extremely useful for Passage PLANNING! Get it!!

I've been using VPP for planning for 5 years. Anything you can do with pilot charts you can do better, faster, and easier with VPP. Great planning tool.

I have it too. Much faster to use than spending hours over Pilot Charts.

I used the VPP and now got the VPP2 from a friend. make sure you build a polar for your specific boat before you start using the program for planning (unless a boat like yours is already on the list). There are very broad variations in the outcome depending on how your boat is sailed.

We have used it for several years now and find it useful for passage planning also. The reports give you some good averages and are helpful when used in conjunction with good weather sources for forecasting. Chuck

I've used it for years as a planning tool. Well worth the money and easier to store than the paper charts.
