Re: Trust Google satellite ?

I've seen it reported that corals can grow anywhere from one inch to eight inches in one year. So, if conditions were optimum? You could expect a reef to expand eight inches up and into what had been clear passage the year before. And of course if there is hurricane damage and the bottom changes from that...Grain of salt.

I use GE2KAP just fine in areas where the charts are not detailed or accurate, mainly looking for reefs around islands, and it has always provided great information.

Re: Trust Google satellite ?

It's largely a matter of sea state. If it's dead calm, no swell to drop you down onto something sharp and no, or a light offshore breeze you could slowly motor in visually and if the water is deep enough go to anchor otherwise give it a miss.

I use Google Earth images to do what you want to all the time, OpenCPN allows you to activate a link to the image from a waypoint and I mark all the anchorages from the cruising guides on the CM93 charts I use.

Re: Trust Google satellite ?

Would I plug it into the chart plotting software and not even look out the window as I piloted in...no.

Would I use it as part of my navigational tools...sure.

^^^^^^^ THIS!!!

Satellite images, charts, your chartplotter, even your depth gauge are all just aids. In the end you have to open your eyes and look around you!

Re: Trust Google satellite ?

I've used Google to thread the needle in narrow channels when I was fortunate enough to get a satellite shot at low water.

Works great. Yes I trust the accuracy, as much as anything can be trusted.

I would follow President Reagan's advice; "Trust, but verify!'

Look and see if it worth checking out. Then take your tender and verify that it is safe and worth going to.

Sounds like you need a forward looking sonar (puns intended). [emoji16]
