Re: The Lighthouse Thread

I'm partial to the Seguin lighthouse in Maine. It has a small harbor around the back of the island where you can grab a mooring and hike up to the light and stroll all over the island trails. Just a glorious place.

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

Thanks Delancey for opening this thread.
Here is the Barrenjoey Lighthouse (Australia NSW, just north of Sydney) with some history here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barren...ead_Lighthouse

hmmm, although the lighthouse appears on my computer the right way up (light on top), it seems I can get the lighthouse here only on its side.... any suggestions are welcome

Oh, that... it was originally designed for use in Australia... you know, down under... and the order was cancelled. These folks picked it up on Craig's list for cheap...

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

When I was a little kid we toured the Raspberry Island Lighthouse in the Apostle Islands in western Lake Superior.

I was maybe three feet tall at the time but I can still vividly remember the battery bank that was used to provide back-up power for the light in case the generator failed.

I remember feeling awestruck and inspired by something I coulnd't intellectually understand but that I could look at and sense was a great power that needed to be appreciated.

Love the internets. Found this picture. Might not mean much to you but for me it is like magic. A magic power that helps keeps us safe.

Re: The Lighthouse Thread

Deal Island , Bass Strait.
Was the highest lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere ( 301 metres) and I think the second highest in the world. Unfortunately this meant the light was often obscured by cloud. Built in the 1840s from granite quarried on site, turned off in 1992

Hook Head lighthouse in Co Wexford, Ireland. Claimed by some to be the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. Built sometime between 1172 and 1240.
