If you are using a set of 'Capt. Field's Improved' parallel rulers you don't need to bother with the compass rose on the chart.
That said I haven't used // rulers on my boat for mega yonks.... haven't seen my portland plotter for a while either.... I use a pair of graduated set squares
For what it is worth, I bought my first plotter this summer. I have had GPS for a number of years and before that a Decca set, but in all that time I have kept paper charts and plotted my course. I love my plotter but as I learnt from my Dad, belt and braces son, belt and braces......
