what good really is that if they don't tell the boat draft?

I also find over 1/2 the hazard posts on the ICW about shoaling are really because 4' draft power boats think they "in the channel" if the depth is 6', which is way out of the channel so of course they go aground on the curves
Same observation.
6-1/2’ draft

I can live with it over Active Captain from now on.

Glad to hear. Thing to realize about WWG is that it is a hybrid between a standard guide and a pure crowd source tool like AC. It uses crowd source data, but it also verifies the info before posting it.

I know they're expanding the tool all the time, so if you have a suggestion, do send it in. They want the feedback.

Does it really? There are lots of WWG anchorages etc. shown on AquaMap that have 0 reviews and for which no one has ever written an Active Captain review for that location. I don't think I have ever seen a hazard in WWG listed with comments. I bet the only verification WWG does does is when they call a marina and say "Hey update your info and pay us $100 and we will include you".

In the end if people think AC isn't as useful as in the past the only people to blame are the users. You already have read the problem here on this thread. people feel it is too hard to go online and update something they get to use for FREE!

Re: Successor to ActiveCaptain?

Took thread comments to heart. Updated boat ramp description, 3 years old, with recent observations in AC via Navionics/BoatingHD. I could not add anything useful to the existing commentary on the anchorages I used.

You make some really good points. I don’t use waterway so no comment on that.

I found AC useful because I use it outside the USA and in some fairly remote areas. Often there are only a few or even a single review/comment for an anchorage.

I have contributed in the past using AquaMap and would contribute more again if I could figure out how to make the damn thing accept my inputs.

But at least from your comments here I know it’s possible, or should be. I had just assumed it was GARMIN being dicks.

Re: Successor to ActiveCaptain?

Sailor oh,

Due your comments I took a closer look at AC settings.

I had not updated since 2018 and I was not “signed on” to GARMIN AC.

AND. Made a comment and it accepted it.

Thanks for your help.

Agreed. This is in the (very large) category I'll call "stupid reviews."People post useless crap. It's the nature of crowd sourcing; you have to ignore the unhelpful reviews and take the malcontents' comments with a grain of salt.

I would encourage everyone to think about the person reading the review, there at a later date, in a different boat, possibly looking for a different experience. Find something useful to say. If it's a business (fuel, marina, mooring) then include the price! Those change all the time, so there's always something to update. Even if nothing has changed, add something new. Anything.

I'm totally on board with going back to updating AC again. I just don't want to feel like me and SailorBoy are the only ones.

So, go through your logs and photos and pick a few places you've been this year which you can update. I'll do the same, and even try to do some real-time updates whenever I find a decent data connection.

This really is a case of "use it or lose it."

Post back here with a summary of how many updates you've made. High score wins something. Not sure what yet. I'd offer the ActiveCaptain hat I earned back when Jeff started it, but he neglected to ever send it to me.

I tried to update AC to correct some VERY incorrect information on my favorite anchorage. This was prior to the Garmin acquisition. It seems the old process required that the original poster be allowed to 'approve' the update. I got a weird E-mail basically explaining why the original poster thought his info. was correct and mine was wrong. My update was never accepted.

My choice was to submit a contradictory entry beside the incorrect one. I decided to let it be and never contributed to AC again. I do use it extensively.

Re: Successor to ActiveCaptain?

Literally just stumbled upon an iOS app called Argo. All I have done is download it so far. Anyone heard of it?

Will report back with an update later.
