Oh it was actually there at one time, but was sunk in WW2 during the battle of the Coral Sea

Re: Sandy Island... A CIA conspiracy?
I am with the Auzzies on this one. Islands do form and disappear quite regularly, but they don't gain a depth of 1.3 Kilometers from wave erosion. I think some person put it on digital media in 2000 and wanted to see how long it would go before being discovered.
After all that boat sailed over the grid. Physical knowledge trumps cyber knowledge every time.

Brings a whole new meaning to " a mariner should never rely on one source of navigation information" doesnt it? The eyeballs rule!

Re: South Pacific Island discovered......to not exist!
I raised this question a while ago: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...and-78944.html
The real weird thing is that it shows up on google earth. I though that was based on satellite photo's.
We sailed from Huon reef to Chesterfield reef, and according to SOME charts Sandy island lies right on the rhumb line. (On others it isn't there at all.) Since we looked like arriving there at night, I actually steered to pass it to the South. Even though I was FAIRLY confident it wasnt there.

Yes, France definitely has warships and their crew eats and drinks very well. Our Chief's Mess was guest aboard a French Destroyer in Toulon and we never had such a great meal.
kind regards,

Why is it always some guy from Alabama that has to disparage other nationalities on an international forum? Remember America would still be a British colony without the French, and America's founding father's got most of their political inspiration from the French Revolution. Not to mention Napoleon conquered most of the world at one point, the French mostly single handedly held off the Germans for most of WWI, I could go on and on. Most of the worlds most respected and advanced military schools are still in France. They have a long and glorious military history that frankly puts the very short and fairly inauspicious military history of America to shame. Writing all of that off because of WWII and the Vichy government is just childish, it's that "we won the war for you guys-again" attitude (when as usual America just showed up for the finishing rounds to get in on the glory), that makes some Americans unwelcome in parts of the world. Read some history. We as Americans owe the French everything, and WWII just starts to square that debt. Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite!

I am afraid that much tosh has been written on this subject. It is nothing about erosion whatsoever. It's a glitch in Google maps and the feature never appeared on navigational charts. The Dr in the story and many contributors in the debate are totally ludicrous. Put your faith in professional chart compilers and not an internet company that is using a database that was never designed to navigate on!
