SIMRAD NSS post GPS rollover update - wrong file?
This is for those of use with discontinued/legacy versions (pre-evo) of the NSS series of MFDs from SIMRAD.
If you have one, I’m assuming -that like me - you’re affected by the GPS rollover issue. I have no precision navigation (Lat/Long) or timing data shown on my display.
I visited the SIMRAD site and navigated to their proposed software update via Help and Support > Manuals and Software updates > NSS > Software
Unfortunately, while the site shows an update is available dated 01 April 2019, when you download that update from their ftp server you get this file
NSS-3.0-46.2.24-28289-r1-Standard-1.upd
Which is the version we were all running when the Nov 2018 problem with ‘no time’ popped up. While the no time problem wasn’t too crippling, you still had precision nav (Lat/Long) it did make looking up tides and currents a bit more work.
In Jan 2019 SIMRAD released NSS-3.0-46.2.24-28289-r2-Standard-2.upd which gave us time back - and it was the current version of the software running when we were hit with GPS roll over.
So, as noted here https://www.simrad-yachting.com/news/gps-week-rollover/ SIMRAD knows the NSS are affected, but don’t have a update ready. I can only assume they removed the Version 3.0 R2 update and ‘fell back’ to the R1 update so at least we could navigate.
I did a ‘contact us’ write up to them, asking that they have their server jockey check to make sure they simply didn’t mess up the ftp link hyperlinked by the download button - but I’m leaning towards no upgrade available now, so here, use this old version that at least gives you posit data.

One data point, I have the B&G version of this MFD, the Zeus T8, one of the first made. I have not updated any software, and this device is not affected by this issue.
Nor is the even older non-touch Zeus Z8 at the nav table affected.

Re: SIMRAD NSS post GPS rollover update - wrong file?
Thanks for posting this!
I must admit I would never have thought of reinstalling the old software.
It simply wouldn't have occurred to me that Navico would release a software update that would completely bugger their plotter 3 months later.
I guess it's obvious I'm not a software engineer.
Thanks again, I owe you a beer!

Do these units use internal GPS recievers?
If they're connected to external recievers they probably wouldn't have any problems

They can be configured to use another GPS source.

Ah, OK, so that's the issue.
Yes, I use a Simrad GPS/GLONASS/Galileo receiver, not the lame internal GPS.

Re: SIMRAD NSS post GPS rollover update - wrong file?
So what should one do?
I am in the same situation with a Simrad NSS8.

In the meantime go back to the v3 r2 software as posted above. Copy the address and paste it into your browser.
The time and date will be wrong, but at least the chartplotter will be functional.
Presumably Navico will eventually bring out yet another software fix. Maybe it'll even work.

Re: SIMRAD NSS post GPS rollover update - wrong file?
Bit daft considering the NSS 8 isn’t that old, they knew about the rollover but didn’t bother to future proof it even a little.
Mine is showing the correct position but the date is 2099 and i have no time displayed anymore.
I’m not sure where you guys are seeing the various updates though. From what i can see the NSS8 hasn’t had an update since July 2014

Oddly a search for NSS8 on the Simrad site returns zero results. I hate it when companies pull this.

The clock problem arose a few months back, November 2018. In January Navico released a software update which fixed it.
Unfortunately it seems to have buggered it up for the rollover though.
Looks like they've removed that update from their site now.

Re: SIMRAD NSS post GPS rollover update - wrong file?
I haven't downloaded the update, so while I have an incorrect date displayed, and cannot utilise the tides function, for example, the chart plotting seems to be accurate (I think!).
What irks me is that this rollover should come as no surprise to anyone.
Even if not planned for by the chip supplier, Navico should have made provision for a "fix" regardless. One of the reasons I installed Navico, as opposed to Garmin, was that Navico supposedly supported legacy equipment.
I hope the heat from disgruntled owners forces them to address this quickly, lest their reputation suffers further.
Should have gone with Furuno!
