Sending a position to a map

Hello,

Planning a big sailing trip, I am looking for a program, app or website by which I can send an e-mail with my position and have my route appear on a website (or better my website). Eventually with a comment or picture. Do you know something like that ? I am mostly mid in the ocean and my e-mails will be sent though satelite phone. Thank you. for your advice.

Garmin inReach does that and much more. Yes it costs a few hundred USD and $60/month. But it provides what you are looking for AND 2-way communications. Not thrilled with their weather forecasts- but it has that also.

See https://share.garmin.com/williamherrmann for an example, then click "view all" in upper right.

While the device allows you to connect a phone or iPad via bluetooth- if you change connected devices the inReach should be rebooted.

Re: Sending a position to a map

Hello,

I am not interested in a device, but in an App or program. I know my position, I am able to transmit it by mail. I just need to convert these information on a website.

Can you send files? GPStrackmaker does this - you download from a GPS such as a Garmin handheld into the software, and it builds a map (track) that includes data such as speed and exact time of each segment. The free version does everything you want, the only requirement would be the person at the other end opening the file in the software.

Knowing that you don't want a device, I still can't keep from thinking that a SpotX or other model of Spot might be the best solution, since the track opens in software at the receiver end. My wife can track me when I'm out riding in a big forest, it's by satellite, costs $200 and $12 a month.

Easiest would be to add a marinetraffic map to your site and have an AIS transceiver.
Does not work way offshore, but not too far out it works well.

Apart from that it's a free solution, bare the one-time purchase of your AIS system. Still that will benefit your safety anyway.

We do it that way you can see it here:

Btw. I am aware that we have an issue with the photo enlargement on the site. Just did not get to fixing it as of yet.

Re: Sending a position to a map

Henris,
try noforeignland.com . It does exactly what you want. It was developed by a fellow sailor (I am not connected other than being a user).

We use it and are happy with it.
Here is our track:

It allows updating the position via different means.
