+1

Of course they could have been captured by Somali Pirates , escaped , been attacked by Kraken and then probed by Aliens .

But probably not .

Cheers for that.

I am sure it all looks a lot less worrisome than it did last week.

Sounds like another false alarm in the South Pacific caused by spotty SPOT coverage.

re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Hi to all worried about Nina! We recently sailed our boat from Nelson to Newcastle. We had a SPOT that we couldn't get to work at all. We had a hired sat phone that worked really well but was very slow to respond. The weather across the Tasman has been very variable and, like us, it's likely that Nina has struck quite a few patches of dead calm, so if they can't motor, they'd be sitting still or going backwards. There's also a low pressure system sitting out off the NSW coast at present so if they're sitting above that, they may well be hove to as the wind would be right against them. If they're below it though, they should be in Newcastle soon. I work in Newcastle so I'll report here if I see Nina but I imagine they'll call family etc. once they're in anyway.

I wouldn't be too worried. There's been some rough weather out there lately but nothing that should be a threat to Nina. Plenty to slow her down though.

re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

I sailed from Wellington to Sydney, Aus in 2010. My Spot messenger had no problem if I made sure it had a clear view of the sky. It worked all the way across. I also used it from Tonga to NZ without a problem in late 2011.

According to the Spot coverage maps, coverage in the Tasman should be no problem with good coverage all the way to New Caledonia. If something has changed and there is no longer good coverage of Spot between NZ and Aus, then the websites need to be updated.

I sure hope all is well. Weather has been terrible lately in NZ so hopefully it is just they are slowed down and delayed.

You are lucky as many don't agree with you especially off NZ. You might have better tech than they do.. Some servers better than others. Cherie

re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

It seems that there are Spots and Spots. Our Spot doesn't work at home in Port Stephens, and it didn't work in Nelson either. It's a Spot that's somehow linked to a phone and that seems to have been the problem. Anyway, I've also heard good reports of Spots but it's also no surprise to me to hear that the Spot on Nina isn't working.

re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Could be....my model is several years old and the second generation type (Spot II). It is possible that the latest versions may not work as well.

I have never tried using it with normal alkaline batteries and always used the more expensive lithium cells (Energizer Ultimate) recommended. I am not sure if this makes any difference but they are better at holding their voltage than regular Alkaline batteries.

re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Everywhere I have tried my Spot in NZ from Wellington to New Plymouth and the far north around to Opua it works without a problem....usually within a minute or two. I don't see why Nelson or Port Steven should be a problem. I would contact Spot and see what they say. If I couldn't get good coverage in NZ, I wouldn't be happy and ask for my money back.
