One more band wagon item.

For those criticizing Nina as to her communications remember Evi's Iridium call was undelivered! So don't assume messages you send are delivered.

Hopefully Friend of Nina has access to a much higher resolution and some way to scale it down to a low-res first look.

I had a quick look at landserf and whitebox but both seemed to require ShaktiGurl's level of GIS expertise to get started. I'll keep looking.
I am guessing they will be hi-res but the imaging sensor has not been mentioned yet. I am hoping for 10m or less or it will be quite difficult to see something of Ninas size. It will take many images to get the entire area and hopefully we can get multiple dates.

I don't know of any good open source image processing tools that aren't specific to a sensor. But I think this will be a visual seach using images like you see on google earth. In fact, I could save them as KML files and then anyone could view them using google earth.

I could also try to run some target detection to find possible targets in the image and export this to a vector file for others to search and weed out the false positives. It would be helpful to have an ftp account where we could upload/download data for sharing.

I would certainly like to help if I can.

Yes Cloudsail, that's her in that image.

http://goo.gl/maps/Vgfyy

It also corresponds to the picture of her decked in flags in Whangarei. That was her permanent berth and there was a noticeboard with the history of Niña tacked to the wharf pile next to her.

Cheers

I am pretty sure that is NOT Nina in the Google images. I have been to the wharf and if I remember correctly the big catamarans in the picture are 45 or 50 feet long. Nina is much longer than them. I am pretty sure the Google images are old and were taken before Nina was in Whangarei.

I've been following this with interest from the start but I'm new to forum posting but that doesn't look to have worked. I .searched on google earth and a vessel appearing like the lovely niña appeared in the pics for whangarei

I can't promise anything but I have a couple of leads. Leave it with me. How much storage and bandwidth/ month do we need for a job like this?

No idea until we know what the imagery is. If its something like what you see on GE, each image is at least .5gb. But I don't know how many they are providing. I would guess 5-10gb to start.

Hi Cherie.. Fantastic news re: progress being made with your Mom's phone records

I am so amazed at some of the stories being posted in the papers , must be so upsetting to see such a misrepresentation of the condition of the Nina, you have been so calm in the face in some of these ridiculous claims, I commend you for your restraint and forgiving nature!

That is my husband posting above re: the google image of Nina , he has a photographic memory with anything to do with boats, and was very taken with the beautiful Nina

Our thoughts are with you all

Yes I recognized Whangeri instantly! That was the plank way my daughter walked down last June 2012 to get married by my brother on the Nina! Lovely little area.

Re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

I bow to your superior knowledge of the Nina but anyway on this these pics you can clearly see her berthed in that spot in front of the green buildings , in anycase a good visual of her aerial shape in this image from her plans, but just remembering that she will look smaller aerial as spars not factored in

Re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

In response to Alan's query, above. Whangarei is NZ boatbuilding heartland. I'm sure there'd be any number of boatbuilders there who would know Nina and be well-placed to provide informed comment about the boat - should the media be interested. The fellow relied upon so far seems to know very little about boats, or people for that matter.

Still waiting and hoping here in Newcastle.
