AIS transponders are cheap and easy to install. Certainly less than $1000 here in the USA. I train all of my crew as to how to use it for their watches.

Of course I would love to see the skipper show up with his crew intact. But Nina now is long overdue with no reported sighting by the SAR and all others in the area, I'm sure the NZ coast guard have put out a message or two asking all to keep a lookout for here. Her in the USA that would happen for a overdue boat for many days. The fact that no sightings have been reported is a bad sign.
Take it you've never been in prolonged gale situations that last weeks on end where all you may cover is 15-20 miles a day.. and not often in the direction you may wish.. speaking as a former 'Wooden Boat Owner' with friends who own and sail these 100yr old boats across the Atlantic etc I feel like many you over estimate AIS and under estimate Timber...
As for AIS... whats to train.. apart from how to read.. and click keyboards or switches...

Re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Happy 10,000 boatman, I didn't notice. I once made an October, gulf of Alaska crossing, and we on a fishing boat, made 1.2 knots to the good for a verrrry long time. Another time off the coast of Florida, caught by a tropical storm and were forced to heave to for several days to ride it out. I still think there is much to hope for and I am keeping them in my prayers. Never underestimate an old Salt, we are just mean enough to ride it out and come in cussing & pissing.

Well the consenses is proving that incorrect. I doubt I'm confused about people holding out for loved ones and the rest of the people here holding their tongue. Apparently, you're not getting that part.

Re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Could we have a clarification on the schooner's name? The graphics show that it is Niña (Neen-ya) with a tilde, not Nine-uh or Neen-uh. Sorry if this has been asked, I think I've read all the posts at least once.

My hopes and prayers!

Yes, for those who don't know, "nina" with a tilde over the second "n", means a young girl, sort of like a daughter of the sea.I don't know how to make my computer do the tilde either. Anyhow, the correct pronunciation is "Neen-yah".

If you copy and paste "Niña" from ryon's post (or this one) it should work with most browsers.

I just find a word that has one in it, like 'señor' then cut & paste.

Best!

Re: Schooner Nina - MERGED 3 THREADS

Another thing I thought about last night.

My iridium phone works much better in the cockpit then below. It has an external antenna i could install to use it below, but i have not.

My spot messenger lives in a cup holder on the rail. It is entirely possible an incident such as getting pooped might cause simultaneous casualties of both of them.

Of course their will be comments about how others keep theirs in a padded vault below, and would never be so careless to actually have these things in the cockpit where they are used...

Just a thought that might explain the non-comms via sat phone and spot.

My heart, my thoughts and my prayers are with everyone close to those on board, their loved ones and friends etc. One of the things I have continually stressed to my kids is "never give up". I am sure that whatever weather has befallen them, they have not given up. Just wish I had more to offer than words of hope and encouragement, which in themselves just don't seem to be very helpful. Hang in their folks!
