Re: Samsung S4. Can Anyone Suggest Good Nav & Weather Apps?

Navionics is good but it uses online charts so your nab is disabled beyond phone signal and your data plan will be effected.

Some people may need apps like Mx mariner or memorymap.

Nope, it downloads and stores charts. I've used it in the middle of the Coral Sea.

If you're connected by wifi when you do the downloading, it doesn't affect your dara plan at all.

Are you sure? Last summer it required connections and fresh downloads...perhaps I don't have a setting correct?

Re: Samsung S4. Can Anyone Suggest Good Nav & Weather Apps?

Yes, you are right! It does download and then store the charts. Turned off Wifi and set on Airplane mode and the charts are still there for Navionics US East, from Maine to Fl and Bahamas. --Wonderful. Ghost Commander shows the charts in ../Navionics/charts/USEast/ awesome.

Last night I deleted the old chart program EarthENC as it was showing errors.

Quite sure. I use it frequently out of phone coverage, including in Australia before I swap out my PNG SIM card.

You could also use these two FREE programs, both using your old .KAP/.BSB charts.

OruxMaps - Has a FREE special PC based map converter to use with their
navigation app. Also accepts Routing .gpx files.

Marine Navigator - Install your .kap maps to your Android device and start
the navigation app which converts and installs your maps at a button push.

Both of course uses your phone´s GPS.

For weather apps I use PocketGrib,PredictWind,WindfinderPro and PassageWeather.

Re: Samsung S4. Can Anyone Suggest Good Nav & Weather Apps?

I have used PLan2Nav from Jeppensen, It works pretty well, and even includes a weather and wind feature. It also has off-line active captain markers, which I love.

The app is free. Charts of the entire US, including Explorer Chart derived charts of the Bahamas, is $30. How can you beat that???

Re: Samsung S4. Can Anyone Suggest Good Nav & Weather Apps?

Don't know if it varies by carrier model, or if NOAA has fixed things, but as of two weeks ago MyNOAACharts said it was incompatible and could not install on the Galaxy S4.

FWIW.

Device version incompatibilities are apparently a major reason why programmers would rather write for iOS than Android, because "one size fits all" under iOS, to a great extent.

It's almost enough to make me go over to the dark side....

the current version of mynoaacharts is 'experimental'. noaa is offering it to receive comments from the general public. they state on their website that it is for android tablets only. i loaded it to my samsung galaxy 7" tablet and it works fine. i tried to load it to my samsung galaxy smartphone and it won't even recognize it on the play store.

in any case, i like it. it has a really easy method of downloading complete chart sets roughly by coast guard district, and also coast pilot books. it works with your tablets' gps. i emailed them back that i really like it and hope they will continue development and distribution.

Have "installed" MyNoaaCharts from My computer, "Google Play" -Android apps, and it does not seem to have loaded onto my Samsung S4. MyNoaaCharts requires v4.0.3 Android. I have 4.3 android.

" they state on their website that it is for android tablets only."
Interesting, because if you locate it in the Google Play Store, you see the app name, the app author, and the very next line says DESIGNED FOR PHONES.

If you scroll down and read the rest of the descriptive text under the screen shots and all, yes, it does say tablets right now. But since it says right up top DESIGNED FOR PHONES....First the IRS spends billions on a computer system that won't work, then healthcare.gov, and now NOAA too?

Do we really have to have some of these programmers kneecapped before the rest start showing some attention to detail?
