Sailboat Transfer in Netherlands - NO EXPERIENCE -

Hello everybody,
my name is Marco and I live in Germany, close to the 3border area.
My wife and I have recently bought of a beautiful sailboat, a very old but well maintained C&C27 Kroeneburg from 1976. She is our life dream becoming real.
But... I have almost zero experience about sailing in The Netherlands, and a very limited experience in sailing in general
The boat is located near Workum, Netherlands and I need to sail her as soon as possible to Roermond (Netherlands).
I've asked for a quote for the transfer of the boat by a skipper, and while at first he estimated 3 days for the transfer, now he told me yesterday that it would take at least 6 days.
The price for a 6 days transfer would be more than 1000 euros so i'm also considering the transfer of the boat by truck (i'm waiting for a quote).
My question is... I've studied the dutch maps and i've made with the help of navionics ipad app the route from workum to Roermond... is it so difficoult as a first experience ?

Thank you very much in advance for your answers and help!

Marco & Elisabeth

A 1000 euros seems very reasonable for the transfer. I have no experience to say trucking would be less expensive. Join the skipper for the transfer. Then your 1000 euros will also give you some experience too.

The Netherland canals are very easy for a monohull assuming you stay on the standing mast routes. Charts will tell you whether bridges open, their air draft when not open and the maximum beam a bridge/lock can handle (but frankly that won't be an issue for you). Towns and villages have places to tie up at night and you won't have any real current to deal with.

I don't remember my Navonics being that helpful in the canals but navigation is not really an issue. There some good guidebooks available too.

If you have the time, I would highly recommend it. It was one of our best experiences in northern Europe.

Welcome, Marco & Elisabeth,

and congrats on the new boat!

I sent you a private message to help you connect with sailors that could probably help you transfer the boat yourself.

It should be a fairly easy trip, but having little experience, a new boat and sailing in another country, you may want to take someone with you who's 'been there, done that'

I'd have loved to help you guys out myself to be honest, but I don't have the time

Hi, Ostinato,
thank you for your help, your name sounds Italian, I'm Italian!
The mast has been dismounted and put over the boat in travel mode. I've heard that some locks are closed in this period of the year (opening available on call) and others have very limited working hours. But I don't have a clear picture and the majority of the website I've found are in dutch, so not very helpful for me
Anyhow, I'll study a little bit more today and see if I can do it by myself, may be with a help during the first day or two!

Thank you!
Marco

Times what you need. Im not sure the route by canal inland. But if youve bought the boat you may as well pocket that 1000 euros and do it yourself.

If you want translation dutch/english or dutch/german of the websites, just give me the URL's of these sites and I will translate them for you. It should be no problem to call the locks for information, most people in Holland understand and speak English well.

Thank you,
Yes you are right! I would say 99% of people in Netherlands speak a perfect English !
I'm just trying to find a website with the information about locks, timings, working hours, rules...

Try typing: 'bediening sluizen in Nederland' in Google. Then you will get a pdf file with the timing of all locks in the Netherlands. I guess you can make sense of most of what is printed there. If you encounter any problems just let me know.

Dear Marco,

Most of the locks are working. There not much pleasure craft traffic at this time of the Year. That is no delays with congestion at the locks.

It is mostly a non-tidal journey. I'am sure that there a people that will help you to transfer the boat to Roermond, but it takes some days.

There is also the possibility to do it by Road. There are several transport companies specialised in boat transport. Sometimes the are in need of freight for a trip back. A well known company is Van de Wetering (Boat Transport | Van de Wetering)

If you can wait till January, then there are a lot of Transports from the Netherlands to the Dusseldorf Boat Show and back with a route via Roermond. And they can take 2 Boats in one transport.

If you sail yourself, avoid the main Inland shipping Channels like the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.

Hi Marco & Elizabeth
Really, don't worry. Your first lock you will be full of apprehension but after that you will see how easy it is and how helpful everyone else is.You're biggest problem will be not to appear a novice.
May I ask if your engine is in good condition ?
The first time I did the French canals to the mediterranean all I had was the AA road book of Europe to guide me and the kind help of other travellers.
If you pay someone else you will miss out on a great adventure. Also you will be a thousand euros poorer. ( not everyone has the wherewithal to part with that amount of money without a seconds thought ).
May I say also that if you have bought the boat that you love why would you want to send it by road , unless of course , you are short of time.
With best wishes

Don't take unnecessary Risks. It is really no Adventure to do it with Road Maps.

You need the Inland Waterway Charts and perhaps the Charts of the IJsselmeer if you take that route. I'am sure people will help you with lending the Charts.

If you allready use OpenCPN you can get the ENC Charts of the Inland Waterways for Free.

And if the Boat has been idle for some time, it is wise to replace the fuel filters and replace the cooling system impellor. And let a mechanic check the engine before you leave.

This is really a great and encouraging post... I'm more adventurer than my wife and actually she is more concerned than me
That said, someone told me also that entering the sluices with the mast lowered might be challenging...
One option might be to sail the first couple of days with the someone more expert and then... continue "the adventure" !

The boat was inspected by an expert before the purchase, (very professional, BLONKJACHTEXPERTISE | Welkom bij Blonk Jachtexpertise, expert in het keuren of taxeren van uw boot, zeiljacht of motorjacht ) we found some minor issues that were fixed few days ago (nothing serious luckly). The engine was serviced (cooling, oil, filters) and also new batteries are installed, so it seems that she is ready
