Rio Guadiana Portugal/Spain Border

Has anyone sailed up the River Guadiana - bordering Portugal and Spain and beneath the Suspension Bridge ?
Two different bridge heights above water are given - 20 metres and 18 metres
What is the tidal range in the River ?
Any experiences out there ??

I zapped it with a laser a while ago, though can't find the numbers now!
think it was about 21.5m from water line to underside probably near low water. Definitely more than 20m
if you pass under round about low water you can get about 8 hours fair tide on the way up. Beautiful! Will be hotter than hell up there right now though..

Hi and thanks for your information. We have a new Lagoon 40 CAt picking her up in France on 5 August. The River looks interesting - we never got there on our previous circumnavigations in our old cat. Not too worried about heat... it will be a nice change from the English 'summer' here on our narrow boat in the canals ... locked down for past three months...

Knew there was a thread about this somewhere..

I just went under a couple of times and zapped the underside of the bridge with a laser measurer.

Sunday 30/10/16 at approx 12.00 utc from Bridge to water = 22.22m
Thursday 3/11/2016 at approx 12.17 utc from Bridge to water = 23.25m

Doing a quick revision of calculating secondary ports from reeds both come out very close as 24.35 from chart datum or 21.25m at MHWS ayamonte of 3.1m.

Feel free anyone to check the calcs please, not sure the secondary port differences would be the same for the bridge and ayamonte...

Up the river and Culatra are 2 of my favourite things Alcoutim is a great free place to anchor up for the winter.

It is a lovely river and I seriously considered wintering there myself but a local warned me about serious flooding during heavy rains

We’re 21m from waterline to masthead and have a vhf antenna above that. We went under the bridge with the tide in both directions with room to spare.

There was one nasty incident years ago when both a Spanish & Portuguese reservoirs open sluices at the same time.
But it still can very occasionally flood with a few days heavy rain. Invariable well forecast so you can run up the river to hide or go down to one of the marinas which are pretty cheap in the winter. Easily dealt with, lots of boats spend the winter up round Alcoutim & many stay all year round.

This is as bad as it got couple winters ago up at Pomarao, just means free water Though there can be a lot of pine needles and bits of tree etc in the water for a few day, even when it's normal rafts of cane can get caught in the anchor chain which can sometimes mean a few minutes with a boathook to clear.
