Raspberry Pi help

I bought a Raspberry Pi with a touch screen and Bluetooth keyboard. I installed Raspberian Pixel OS and OpenCPN. But I cannot launch OpenCPN.

When I look for the Application folder it does not exist as far as I can tell. The instructions tell me that the folder should be in usr/local/share/applications/opecpn.desktop but I dont have this folder.

The installation process for OpenCPN went well, it only crashed once.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can check to see if the program installed properly and how I can launch it?

Reinstall without crashes but before you do erase the memory card.

Re: Raspberry Pi help

You could just install openplotter, everything you need plus more is in there.

Re: Raspberry Pi help

The first question is: should I have an Application folder?

I have other applications. Is this a standard folder? Or is it one installed by OpenCPN?

To reinstall, do I simply start from scratch? Do I need to update and upgrade the system too? Or just go right to the commands for OpenCPN?

I have no experience with Linux or Raspberry Pi.

How do you know when something is installed properly?

Re: Raspberry Pi help

Are you running openplotter?

If so everything should be already installed working with all the plugins.

Re: Raspberry Pi help

I am not familiar with OpenPlotter. I have used OpenCPN on my Mac.

I bought a generic Raspberry Pi and installed Raspberian Pixel OS.

I followed the instructions here:
King Tide Sailing: How To Install OpenCPN on a Raspberry Pi

I will take a look at OpenPlotter, but I might be in the same boat, as it were.

Openplotter is excellent, works straight away and makes life easy when setting up nmea inputs. V10 is still much in development but I find it works fine. Then there are menus to update Opencpn and raspbian as and when they are released.

Re: Raspberry Pi help

Everything installed flawlessly.

Now I just have to install some charts!

I'm going to order a DC power adapter and an external Lithium batter for my Pi. That way, I can plug it directly to my power system and have the security of battery backup in emergencies.

I have to also have to start reading up on all the support for NMEA and the sensors.

I see all the individual sensors they offer, is there a single package for all of them with some sort of mounting system?

Re: Raspberry Pi help

I've got a touch screen and a bluetooth keyboard, but I can't seem to access the Icons on OpenCPN's toolbar. What's the trick?

Is there a keyboard shortcut? Or do I have to use a mouse?

Re: Raspberry Pi help

Ok, I just noticed that my Pi no longer sees my wifi networks. There is no wifi network icon anymore. It shows a Wired network icon and when you click on the icon it drops down and displays

Ethernet Network
device not managed

Wi-Fi Networks
device not managed

VPN Connections
> Configure VPN
> Disconnect VPN

How do I get back on the Internet?

Have a look in the wifi tab in openplotter, might be set as an access point. Un tick the "enable access point" box if it is ticked.

Or if you get a wifi dongle openplotter can act as a wifi repeater so you just have to log in once to a new hotspot instead of every device.

Re: Raspberry Pi help

It looks like OpenPlotter wants to run the Wi-Fi chip on the Pi to communicate with wireless sensors. Can it do both? Or, do I have to turn off the wireless function to allow it to go on the Internet?

At the moment, I only have wired instruments and will be setting up a wired network on the boat.
