Re: ¿Radar and autopilot together?

There's also a feature on cars that's critical to automated driving that's not available on boats - brakes!

Re: ¿Radar and autopilot together?

It could be done but nobody has done it and introduced it to the public because human intervention and decisions are necessary. Additionally, sometimes there is no solution for creating an acceptable CPA especially when we are talking about two vessels with two very different speeds. In this case the ideal thing is for humans to talk to each other to create passing arrangements, or to make whistle signals or to alter course "early and apparent" to make it obvious to which side one intends to pass.

In our litigious society, it would also be one heck of a liability to whoever introduces such a thing. I doubt revenues would cover the cost of liability insurance....especially when you are talking about the possibility of ships colliding at sea.

Just because it CAN be done doesn't mean it SHOULD be done ...

Another example of a self-driving boat is Google's unmanned coastal mapping boat:

Re: ¿Radar and autopilot together?

I just had installed state of the art electronics. It is capable of many wondrous things. Just not what you are looking for. A lot more data is available to the skipper, but it still needs to be interpreted.

Perhaps someday there will be an AI with that capability. I doubt I will still be around and I'm not sure I would want it.
