Providing GPS coordinates for website tracking

I'm looking for help setting up a system to transmit GPS data for use on a personal website to provide real-time location data to family and friends.

We could be sailing nearly anywhere in the world, though more than likely in and around Indonesia and PNG.

What can anyone share about current technology available that will allow us to do this?

For worldwide coverage you want a toy like the yellowbrick (name generic).

Spot (name generic) is easy to incorporate into homesites and blogs.

NieSupporter..

You can´t do much better or cheaper than aquiring a Globalstar SPOT Messenger which can link to SpotWalla,a public site which can display trips all over the world. (well almost)
SPOT SATELLITE MESSENGER :: HOME PAGE

See examples here from previous trips:
MENU-1

Cost around US$ 150.- Annual service charge for unlimited use $ 100.-
and if you want regular reports every 10 min an additional $50.- per year.

Re: Providing GPS coordinates for website tracking

You can do it easily with many of the blogs, either with a service such as Sailblogs. sailmail and Xgate plus others will automate the process of posting position information to sailblogs.

or you can set up a site using a content manager such as Wordpress and use one of the Google map plugins.

Or you can mashup the google maps code yourself.

I have been playing with a setup using Wordpress and some of the google maps plugins. I just send an email that I have imaginatively called position report Wordpress filters can choose not to display the position report post but the google map on the site will be updated.

I haven't played with it yet, but I think I should be able to use sailmail which can automatically include the position in each email. Some of the wordpress plugins can strip position information and produce a Google map.

There were some threads on here a recently on Wordpress and the various map plugins; just do a search.

If you can already email from the boat, and get GRIBs in daily then you can provide a position update each time you do a send and receive of your mail at virtually no cost.

406link will do that, but you are using up valuable battery time.
