Planets

Sitting in the garden for the past few evenings I have noticed something very bright in the sky which I haven't previously noticed. From a position 51.N in England the planet appears approximately West at 9.30pm BST and is by far the brightest object at sunset. Indeed it appears first just and the sun sets and the sky is still quiet bright. Altitude is about 25 degrees above the horizon when it first becomes visible and disappears an hour later below the horizon to the north west.

Anyone know which planet it could be?

Re: Planets

Venus is the brightest planet, and it’s very prominent this month in the west after sunset.

Venus. It is currently setting just a couple of hours after sunset in your location.

Good site here to give you rise/set times for all the planets:

Re: Planets

I've also noticed a very bright planet in the early evening with a reddish glow. I'm in the southern hemisphere (right on the tropic of Capricorn). I had just assumed it's Mars, but it looks like it could be Jupiter.

The SkyMap app I have on my tablet shows both Venus & Jupiter below the horizon at 2130 BST, but Saturn as the largest planet to the WNW (note: all labels are in Spanish so: Saturno). Mars (Marte) shows higher over the horizon a bit more N, so likely more visible.
