Passage Cape Town to Richards Bay

I am wanting to move a SV from CT to Richards Bay then on to Mozambique, I know that January to March is the best North South timing but want to know best or doable times to go South North

Re: Passage Cape Town to Richards Bay

You can do it any time of the year but it is a bit of of a port hopping trip. However, you need to remember cyclone season in the southern Indian Ocean is November to March/April, so I would be very careful of going further than Richards Bay up the channel during that period. The trip involves quite a bit of motoring when there are periods of no wind. You also, from Port Elizabeth right up to Richards Bay must keep to the 20 to 50 metre depth contours (just off the shore-break) to keep in the counter current. If you go further offshore, you will most likely end up going backwards with the strong flowing Mozambique/Agulhas current.
