panama to US virgins in april

have invitation to crew a Formosa 47 ketch from Panama to St. Thomas. Seems like an unpleasant up wind , up current slog on a boat with less than stellar upwind creds. Has anyone done this route in April and May? At buzz about safety off Venezuela?

The trip sounds (and looks) like torture. But some people enjoy it. I might like the adventure, but I know my wife wound't. To each their own.

Now, if the sail takes place over a year by slowly island hoping (either north then east or east then north), then it would be pleasant.
