Opencpn crashing.

Hi All.

I have been using opencpn for my first trip last week and it worked fine all week. This morning I went to look at the track I made to review my future routes and opencpn will not start. I had some help off JesperWe and took the navobj.xml.X out of program data un installed opencpn re installed it works fine untill I replace the file I removed and it will not start opencpn again so it must be a problem with the file I am trying to replace that caused this in the first place but I would like to keep a record of the track I have made. I will try and attach the file for you to take a look at if I can.

Thanks Till

The attached file is corrupt.

Can you open the file on your system? Double click the file, and it should open in your browzer..... Lets take a look at that.

I looked at the file locally. It is nothing but zeros.

Do you have another backup navobj.xml.* file?

Hi Dave.

I took all the files out from 1-5 but I have just tried to open those and they too open with a blank page.

Re: Opencpn crashing.

I have found that one of the files has got 377kb so I renamed it like original file and it has opened a window with the following message.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<gpx xmlnspencpn="http://www.opencpn.org" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd" xmlns:gpxx="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/GpxExtensions/v3" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" creator="OpenCPN" version="1.1"/>

But I have tried to put that into the location into program data file again and it still will not show my tracks/routes.

Thanks Till

Re: Opencpn crashing.

OK, take a copy of the file that has the 377kB size, name it navobj.doc and attach it here.

Re: Opencpn crashing.

Ouch. That file has 377 Bytes. Not 377 kiloBytes. It's only the first line actually.
If none of the navobj.xml files you saved before reinstalling OCPN has more data, I am afraid your track is lost.

It's hard to tell why the file got corrupted in the first place, this is not something we've had reports of before.

Re: Opencpn crashing.

Maybe this one might be better I thought that file would be bigger but like you have pointed out its a lot smaller. This is the bigger file I have. Thanks

Re: Opencpn crashing.

Unfortunately that file is completely empty. It has only "null" bytes in it.
It is starting to look like your computer had some kind of failure at the point of your tracks out. I can't see how else a file like that could get created.

Re: Opencpn crashing.

That's odd as it says 357KB but its blank when opened.

Re: Opencpn crashing.

Yes it has 357 kB of null bytes. This kind used to happen years ago if the operating system failed in the middle of writing the file. It has allocated the space for data on the disk but never gotten it written. As I said, it's really hard to know why this happened, and if your other files are as empty as the two ones you have posted so far I fear you are out of luck with respect to your track...
