Open CPN issues

Hi Dave,

I downloaded V 3.0.2. I have tried the install in safe mode with the security software disabled and the machine set on Safe Mode. The install does not appear to be complete and the program crashes as soon as I click the icon on the desktop. I tried installing V3.0.02 on a friends Windows 7 machine with no problems. His fired up immediately. I have checked to insure that updates are all in place since the factory reboot, I followed the advise on your website to install Microsoft Visual C++ SP1. I also tried the install and opening the program in compatibility mode (windows XP SP3) but this did not work either. Below see copy of Program Data Log. Do you have suggestions. I am loading other programs on the computer without a hitch.

Upgrade from a previous version? If so, go to C:\ProgramData (It's a hidden system folder) and rename its subfolder "opencpn" to opencpn.bak - then try to start again.
If it helps, just copy file navobj.xml from the backup you created a while ago to restore your waypoints and routes. You may also try to use opencpn.ini from the backup, but it could be the cause of your problems.
And please post OpenCPN questions directly to OpenCPN - Cruisers & Sailing Forums - we are observing that forum much more regularly.
And if your W7 is set up in a "normal" way, there should not be any reason to install in safe mode.

Re: Open CPN issues

Hi Pavel,
The installation is V3.0.2 and as per your recommendation I renamed the opencpn folder under Program Data to opencpn.bak. The result is the same. The program will not open.

Although the log indicates (attached) a new config file is being created, ACTUALLY no opencpn.ini file has been created. Note, when I rename the opencpn folder to opencpn.bak, the opencpn is created in addition to opencpn.

Where do I go from here.

What's your system's language setting? A very similar issue appeared recently for another user, which turned out to be caused by unsupported language.

Re: Open CPN issues

Hi Pavel,

I went into Ctl Panel, Region and Language which stated the current system locale: English Malaysia. Is this the correct location to get the answer to your question.

That's exactly the problem - Malaysian locales are not supported by wxWidgets (the toolkit OpenCPN uses for it's interface) As a workaround you can now set your locale to say US English or you will have to wait for the next 3.1 beta where there is a fix for this problem.

Thanks Pavel, I will reset the computer, shut-down, then restart and see how we go. Cross fingers.

Re: Open CPN issues

Hi Pavel,

I'm finally on and can open CPN. It was the language selection.

Many thanks for your instructions.
