Re: Old-School Marine Navigation Books.

Apparently US Naval Commanders have to know how to navigate their ship by sextant. (Also airline pilots on international routes?)

Have you looked at these books?

Of course there is nothing on AIS or GPS in the book, but the OP asked for a book of the 60's era.

The entire book is quite easy to read and understand.

I second this. I have a copy from 1940. Very clear instruction.

Just had a look on eBay and there are pre-owned copies available for as little as $20.

Re: Old-School Marine Navigation Books.

I also have the fifth edition of Mixter and it has been invaluable.
The fifth edition has a complete H.O. 211 so with that, current almanac, chrono
and sextant you are set.

Celestial Navigation Step by Step by Warren Norville.

This one is a practical guide to celestial using sight reduction tables H.O. 214, 229 and 249.
The author states that: "If you can count change after buying this book you know all the mathematics you need."

For piloting: "Modern Chartwork" Revised by Captain W. H Squair.
Being "old school" it has chapters covering the use of the DECCA and LORAN.
Textbook used at the Nova Scotia Nautical Institute during the late seventies.

Norie's Tables, first published in 1803.
If you are interested in the mathematics of navigation.

Re: Old-School Marine Navigation Books.

Old versions of Bowditch are useful. I have a circa 1910 version it includes latitude by lunar distance !!

^ Are you sure that isn't longitude by lunar distance?

Re: Old-School Marine Navigation Books.

In addition to Mary Blewett's Celestial Navigation for Yachtsman (1964), I recommend John E. Milligan's Celestial Navigation by H.O. 249 (1974), as the theory is explained in an easier to understand fashion. He also gets into the Noon Shot earlier, which may be all you need.

Reading the theory part several times, again and again, helps, if you find it a bit confusing.

Re: Old-School Marine Navigation Books.

The Admiralty Manual on Navigation Volumes 1 and 2 provide a good coverage on both pilotage and navigation and throw in a good bit on weather as well.

Meh, 99% of people wouldn't even have noticed. But if anyone is interested, I can teach you a much easier method than anything found in old editions of Bowditch ... courtesy of Frank Reed. All you need is an almanac and a scientific calculator (and a sextant and watch, of course). No complicated tables, and the whole process only takes a few minutes.
