New Zealand to French Polynesia (Tahiti)

I am looking into doing this route next season (end of April/early May). Yes - I know this is a challenging trek. I have some thoughts at the moment (mainly based around weather system patterns) but really wanted to hear from anyone who may have done this trip or perhaps up to the Cooks or something similar. It would be great to hear about general strategies and how challenging it was, also weather encountered and the realities vs. the plan. Thanks in advance.

Sapient Sue, sometimes on this forum, did this trip a few years back. Via Cook St. up to HI, and then on to AK. Perhaps a PM to her would help.
