New Zealand (NZ) Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) now available

New Zealand Hydrographic Authority is offering a "free to choose, free to use" official New Zealand (NZ) Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC).

I'm aware of a few people trialing NZ ENC's since late last year but couldn't find how to do it. These are now freely available from LINZ. The site still shows up as being a trial site, with full availability some time in 2020.

There is a modest fee for licencing S-63 charts from o-charts shop to use S-63 charts in OpenCPN. I'm not sure whether this is a one-off or an annual fee.

They still won't release they key though so you can download the charts but not use them. I tried to sign up to the trial to do some testing for O-charts but was refused.. Very difficult people to deal with; one person saying no problem you are in the other saying sod off your not wanted.

The S-63 UserPermit for OpenCPN is valid as long your copies are running on some machine.
There are several copies allowed, so the fee is one-time just to cover the administration costs.

As the IHO S-63 standard mandates, a UserPermit is always only valid for "one system" - a combination of Hardware and Software. Charts licensed for OpenCPN will not run on an ECDIS system and the Admiralty/PRIMAR/Transas/Chartworld sets of the vessel can't be used by OpenCPN or MaxSea.

In general S-63 charts are licensed for a period - max. one year - during which you are receiving or can request updates.
LINZ will go most probably to fortnightly updates likewise the Australian AHS.
Once the license period expired charts will stay on the machine.

We did run tests last summer (Europe) on several OpenCPN systems without issues.

Any news on when the NZ charts will released, or rather when they will start issuing permits?
