Navionics is downloadable on iPad for free. Then you buy the charts. However without buyingcharts you can zoom into an area of the USA and click the Govt icon and download the NOAA chart for free.
Or so it appears.
Is there a catch to it?
Do they stay on the iPad? Or dp they get erased after a month or so?
I am heading to the USA in a few weeks and it would be nice to have free charts on my back up nav system. Actually my back up of the back up...

Yes, they "stay on the iPad". I think it's only thirty or forty dollars for all U.S. Navionic maps. I also paid a small fee for the sonar charts. I love these maps and use them a lot.

You can in fact download all US charts for free. They do stay on your iPad . And you can download new updated charts whenever you want, also for free. We actually do get something for our taxes.
