Depends on if you are bluewater, coastal or lake cruising. Comfortable DR for Coastal and Lake, Sextant for bluewater

Comfortably use DR for coastal work, I am teaching myself how to use the sextant, I would hope I could comfortable switch to that if needed.

I voted for "break out the sextant(with an 'a' not an 'e'), but as Randy said, it differs for coastal; there was no "fix visually" option. I'm shocked that someone has actually voted to call the CG

Perhaps a call, complaining about the loss (of GPS), to your Senator might be more productive, than one to the USCG.

I need to learn celestial and bought a plastic starter sextant and almanac, but in the course of 3 cruises, never had the discipline to get with it.

I can't vote in that poll, I'd probably go to DR *and* celestial but just go to DR if celestial wasn't available to me. Wouldn't call the CG unless I needed them and "I'm not sure where I am" isn't going to be a problem unless I'm, say, four days out at sea with only a three day food supply onboard.
Sex tent? How did you know where we played strip poker when camping?!

I'm with Hellosailer on this (I guess technically if you go "celestial" it is assumed that one is also using DR...how else do you come up with an assumed position?).
Why would one call the Coast Guard unless there is an emergency or a "pan-pan" to proclaim? Do you think that the USCG is going to be able to tell you where you are?

Hey, as good ole Captain Ron (played by Kurt Russell) said, "If we get lost we'll just pull in somewhere and ask directions!"
I voted celestial and now that's over with I'vve decided to break out the ole sextant on a more regular basis to get rid of the rust... mine, not the sextants!

Cap'n Mark
We guys all know that we can't ask for directions (because she's giving them all along....just kidding!) it just wouldn't be manly.
My ex got my Davis Mark2 plastic sextant that used to sell for $75 and now is $200. So, I'm shopping for one yet don't want to pop for that $2000 metal one. What to do?

Wow, someone google sextent. Seems like I'm not the only one with a decrepit sense of spelling. As for the "call coast guard" option in this poll, I remember hearing in a post on this forum about some Australian's being airlifted off of their boat because their GPS had gone down. Please excuse the obscure reference. I just searched for it and can't find the post. Can't decide if it's funny or just depressing.
I started this poll to guage people's navigation skills when going without GPS. It seems like a lot of people who have responded are more experienced navigators who are saying "what do you mean I'd use whichever one best suited me?" I for one am pretty inexperienced and a trying to see where other people fall.
Does anyone know where I can find a used sex tent?

COOL POLE! QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO I TOOK UP CELESTIAL NAV.
DO IT REGULARLY, EVEN ON SMALL HOPS... JUST TO KEEP IN TOUCH...
REALLY NICE TO USE THE STARS, SUN AND MOON. KEEPS YOU IN TOUCH WITH THE PLANET.
I CARRIED THE SPARE (PLASTIC) SEXTANT ON A PLANE TO THE CARRIBBEAN (ANTIGUA/BARBUDA) ALSO TO KEEP PRACTICING. IT NEVER FAILED TO GENERATE POSITIVE CONVERSATIONS IN CUSTOMS, SECURITY INSPECTIONS.
