Messina Straights, Italy

Hi, we are going to be going through the Messina Straits in the next couple of days, north to south. There seem to be a few conflicting bits of information as to the procedures that you need to adopt to go through there. I've read that you must check in with the Messina Straits Authority, another says that you simply have to monitor Channel 16 (and one other, that escapes me at the moment). Has anyone gone through there recently and are you able to advise the current requirements? Cheers in advance.

Not recently, but I remember that there are a lot of eddies and turbulences as well as a lot of traffic in there.

Steer by hand (not by autopilot) and keep a sharp lookout. Monitoring channel 16 is always good practice.

There may be others who can chime in with more details.
Enjoy!

I did it a year or two ago. I left from Toamina (really nice city up the hill), to Milzano. If was a long day.

No need to contact the authority if you stay outside of the 'lanes'. Even if you do contact them, they will most likely ignore you. However, if want to be 100% sure you aren't going something wrong, then it can't hurt.

Autopilot is no problem, keep a sharp look out for a) fast ferries crossing horizontally, and the fishing boats that will change direction on the glimmer of a fish.

This website will show you the currents so you can work out the time to go without messing around to find HW in Gibraltar.

Thanks for the responses. We made it through the Straits easily - it seems they do prefer that you contact them and let them know. Plus also like to be informed when you have left (or leaving) the Straits. In any event, it all worked well, the weather was great.
