Maptech Charts for Capn Voyager
I have a Capn Voyager program that I've gotten to work on a laptop using a Garmin pigtail and MapTech charts for the Hawaiian area. Makes a pretty good chart plotter but only after lots of work on old beater laptops.
My problem is that Martin and I are going to sail from SF to Hawaii in a few months so I'd like to know if anyone has a MapTech CD of charts in the SF Bay area that I might beg, borrow or buy.
Looking for Maptech Charts of SF Bay and the coast.
Thanks for your help.

Just curious, but where in the S.F. Bay Area will you end up?

If you go to Captn Jack's you can buy one dvd with all the latest U.S. charts for $20 and get free shipping. These are the latest published charts, much better than buying used. The work great with Cap'n Voyager but they also come with free Nobeltec software included.

JohnL,
You can also download the charts you need, just before you need them so as to have the latest, here:

As noted the NOAA BSB charts are all free now to download. All the US charts combine for about 3 GB of maps. Paying $20 for a DVD isn't a bad deal if you don't have a high speed connection, but for just a few if you give me charts numbers I could email them one at a time.

Thanks for all your help. I haven't tried anything but Maptech charts with Capn Voyager so didn't know what would be compatible. I will try Capn Jacks. If I get a DVD then I have to transfer the charts to CD to fit in the old laptop. Oh well, all a learning curve.
Yes, a big problem being on dial up.
We'll be starting out from San Leandro and heading out then go South to Half Moon Bay for just an overnighter then head across.
18640, 18645 and 18680 would be the only ones I need.

John,
I have the three charts you need they zip up into 3 files. 2 are about 2MB and the thrid is about 3 MB. If you PM me I can put them up on my FTP site and you can download them. I'll send you the web link so you can use a web browser or an FTP software package to get them. 7MB isn't that hideous to download. If you look at the maps you have they should include .bsb and .kap files and that is what these are.
The dates on thee charts are all summer 2005. That was the last time NOAA updated them. You would still want the notice to mariners for details in and around San Fran harbor that might have changed.

Thanks Paul,
That's very helpful. I do have some BSB and KAP charts already that I've been able to access through a bit of fanagaling on the computer.
I'm still very new to what computers can do although I've been using email since Al Gore invented it.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Sorry about inflation. AT $50 having a disc with ALL U.S. Charts is still not a bad deal. Kinda p**ses me off though when Maptech is only the distribution arm and has NO cost of creation or ownership.
Guess they figure everyone with a boat has lots of $$.

Aloha Bill,
That's a good site. I will try that if Paul and my experiment doesn't work.
Thanks again.
