Long distance communication

I have found alot of information on vessel to vessel communication and other neccessary systems while underway, but I was wondering what if anything other sailors are using to communicate back home. i heard of satt. connections and something using a modem to convert digital email into tones and send it through the radio (no internet connection for browsing the web, only sending text documents) i was wondering the availibility, cost, practicality, and any personal experiences. thanks for your time,

I used SailMail for text email and downloading GRIB weather forecast files when we were cruising. You use the AirMail client on your laptop and a Pactor terminal node controller connected to your SSB radio and laptop. You can also download weather faxes with the proper software. This SailMail Primer, and the links it has to other info will get you started. SailMail has HF transceivers spaced out all over the globe, so you can usually connect without too much trouble, sunspots permitting. SailMail charged US$300 per year when I used it. If you have a ham license you can sign up with WinLink for free.

When out of cellphone range, the principal methods used are SailMail (radio email using marine SSB) and Satphone (Iridium or other satellite systems). I have a slightly dated writeup on these and other systems on the VALIS website: VALIS Follow the links at the bottom of the page for more info.
