Julia Tuttle Bridge Clearance

We have a clearance of 57 ft. plus antenna, so approx. 59 ft.. So my question is: Is the clearance for the bridge is listed as 55 ft. correct, and has anyone have actual usage experience?

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

Denny,

A few years ago I led a Whitby 42 and a Beneteau 423 under the Julia Tuttle at half tide. I (B393) went under the main span and the other two went under the span west of the main span. There is more height under this span. The 423's vhf just cleared, this would be about 57 feet. I don't think you'll get 59 feet through.

But if you're real brave you might try it at low, especially if it's a spring tide. I saw a big cat go under a low ICW bridge once. He did it backwards, going astern. I guess this was so he could really goose it ahead if he touched. He made it.

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

Bridge heights are noted at high water (check your chart for the exact MHW or MHHW or other). Then do the math based on the tidal differences.

There's pretty much little you can do otherwise, other than the reply here where one side of the bridge may be higher than the other side based on experience and local knowledge.

It's a pretty easy hop outside (as long as the weather permits) from Ft. Lauderdale to Government Cut...maybe 25 nm tops.

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

Unfortunately we are just north of Tuttle. So to go south it's back to Ft. Lauderdale we go!

And just inside Gov't Cut is a sweet little anchorage behind Fisher Island if the winds aren't northwest or southeast, called Norris Cut, between Fisher and Virginia Key. We spent an absolutely lovely Christmas Eve Eve (2d before Xmas) there last year. Awesome Miami skyline view.

Denny,

It it good to see you moving again.

You might want to check
http://cruisersnet.net/how-best-to-bypass-julia-tuttle-causeway-bridge-miami-fl/
It reports a little more clearance either side of the center span.

Ahh there is one more bridge on the Richenbacker that is fixed. I am 99% sure that is 55 also.

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

The Rickenbacker Causeway bridge is 78'. And, yes you can get an extra foot out of the Tuttle, but that will only take it to 57'.

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

Do you have mast-climbing gear? Scramble up there like a ring-tailed lemur, temporarily detach your antenna, pass under the bridge, re-attach. . . .

Depending on your nature, that may be preferable to going back to Fort Lauderdale.

After you have raked off your windex, antennas and other gear, you'll wish you had just gone around.

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

With a 53.5' mast height, I hit my antenna. You do the math.

You must have been going too fast and planing.

Re: Juli Tuttle Bridge Clearance

I can't seem to find the MHW figure that this bridge is referring to...?
I am 54.5 foot air draft, and would like to stay inside, if I can. heading south from
Ft Lauderdale tomorrow.
