Jones Inlet, Long Island NY

Hello,

Novice sailor here. I'll be sailing my boat from Oyster Bay, NY, around the tip of Montauk, to her new home in the East Marina in Point Lookout, NY.

I know Jones Inlet is in dire need of dredging and I'm not certain if it's feasible with my old Catalina 27's 4' draft.

If anybody on here has any advice as to the voyage or getting her home to her new slip safely it would be greatly appreciated.

Boats do seem to go in there, but everyone seems to suggest not going in without local knowledge. The sand must move around a lot so the buoys don't mark a channel for very long: following the buoys could put you up on sandbar. Arriving at high tide in nice weather would probably be a good idea. Contact the marina to ask what the best route is. They can tell you: "Stay close to nun #, hang left at can #.... favor the right side between buoys xx and yy".
