Re: john adam Windpilot on Albin Vega?

Thank you all for great replys. Concidering all the information, i think I will go for this one. Alittle concerned about the weight. But as it is shown to be used on vegas before, I hope it will be okei. Ofcourse the pendulum vanes looks alot better. But as I get this one for 500$ I save alot of money.

If they have been popular in the 70ies and 80ies they certainly will work well in 2017+. Except for some plastic the water is the same. Good luck!

Re: john adam Windpilot on Albin Vega?

good luck from me too! the plastikgears & the bushings of the rudder shaft are easily & cheaply replaced, there isn't much to go wrong & to my surprise all owners spoke very highly of their gear (& while I somewhat distrust praise owners lavish on their own gear those krauts all completed their circumnavigations with their wps)
of course all changes in windstregth will require adjustments to the main rudder, but that is the case for all auxiliary rudder windvanes just as the pendulum gears require adjustments on tiller/wheel.

Re: john adam Windpilot on Albin Vega?

We have one of these. Ours is OK, but not brilliant.

It is too small for emergency rudder.

They tend to break off at the very top of the foil too.

It will work on an Albin allright.

Cheers,
b.

A slight (yet unimportant ) misunderstanding: "Except for some plastic the water is the same" was a reference to the plastic pollution not the windvane-plastic...

Re: john adam Windpilot on Albin Vega?

Wrong. The plastic parts could be replaced cheaply but not everywhere and not onboard. A turning machine is required.

And where skills and machinery are present, good understanding of plastics is required too. Nylon is out of question as are many other materials (acetal, teflon, polypropylene).

The cogwheels I do not know what the material is but it is pure magic stuff - no UV damage in 30 years and not wearing off either. Looks like glass injected resin a bit (say maybe fenolic sheets?) - black, gets some oxydation, but does not crack nor expand.

You have been warned.

Cheers,
b.

I was referring to "The gear teeth on the plastic strip out." in a previous post.
as to: haven't heard of them strip out, they' d be easy to carry as spares just-in-case & as they are not turning at any rate of speed given some patience they could be "handcarved" out of plywood if needed in some remote places. the plasticbushings of the aux. rudder are not rocket sience either: could also be carried as spares (just another 1/2kg) and machining them with tolarance to allow for swelling is knowledge that is a few years old...
in fact I always envied the simplicity & easier repairability of the wp over the aries we had on the 1.rtw (repair aluminium castings in the marquesas???) or the atoms (weld stainless...) on rtw 2 & 3. of course aries & atoms are much more "sophisticated" gears & the huge vane of the wp is not as "unobtrusive" as the small atoms vane, worst is the lack of remote control (you have to get out of the dodger & lean over the pushpit when adjusting the wp), but if we bought a boat with a wp today we certainly would give it a good try & see how it works (replace all gears & bushings :-) ) before forking out for a new pendulum gear
(interesting & rare: an owner dowtalks his own stuff -"You have been warned"-...has to be listened to though!

Re: john adam Windpilot on Albin Vega?

OK. I see now.

Stripping teeth is not an issue if you have the original ones. It is some super plastic from the pre-China era.

On the second thought, emergency plastic parts could be (?) cast at sea, in epoxy. I cannot do this but I know some can. Except with this pilot you are not likely to be able to dismount it out at sea except in dead calm and flat ocean.

The BIG plus of the design is that it has its own rudder. This leaves the main rudder to become a fine trim element. I think today only the big Pilot and Hydrovane use this attitude but both are much heavier units.

Being able to grab the tiller at any moment and trim, or overpower, the smaller pilot rudder is very nice. As is less noise and wear on the main rudder (that remains locked 99% of the time now).

Cheers,
b.

Re: john adam Windpilot on Albin Vega?

Hi Sydney88,
Congratulations on being current Warskavi captain
I bought her from the pirates. They already had her for sale, then the motor seized when they were entering Brisbane river. I had a Yanmar 1gm10 in the garage and...
I’d be happy to talk more about what I did to Warskavi and why.
Did she come with the Windpilot? Did you buy her from Simon or someone else?
Maybe private message me - an option if you click on Screw Loose
Cheers, Rod
