Ipad+iPhone Navionics

Hi!

I would like to use the iPad mini (wifi only model) to navigate (Navionics). Will l get an accurate Gps position paired with an iPhone? or do I need to buy a separate Gps tracker device to connect with iPad?

Thanks

I could be wrong but I thought you can only pair the iPad with WiFi that is sending NMEA data. Linking with your iPhone over WiFi won’t out of the box give it the gps data. Best look to the documentation. I use navionics on iPad but with cellular which has the built on gps.

I run I sailor on my pad. Use it a lot for coastal use. Did some off shore running iPads. They work. I still have a harming, 2 handhelds and lots of charts.

We sailed around the world using an iPad Pro with cellular so it has an integral GPS. Works great with Navionics charts and Ovitalmap for navigating with Google and Bing sat photos, which is very useful in parts of the world with poor charts, like Fiji.

I use my iPad with a Bluetooth GPS device, a GPS PRO made by Bad Elf.

Re: Ipad+iPhone Navionics

There are a few ways to get GPS data into a nav program running on an iPad. The most expensive is to buy a top of the line iPad with built in GPS, the next cheaper method is a basic cheap iPad and an external Bluetooth GPS unit, I use Dual brand from Amazon, others like the Bad Elf line. The cheapest is if you already have a WiFi enabled AIS unit onboard like a Vesper, just connect to the Vesper with your pads WiFi and enable the gps in your nav program. I do this with Aqua Maps and Navionics and keep the Bluetooth GPS unit as a backup since it has an 8 hour battery life. If I lose all ship power, I can still navigate for hours on the device batteries.
