How to use Ovitalmap

I have downloaded Ovitalmap to my iPad so I can access Google Earth imigary and plot my position/route on Google Maps off-line and use as a verification tool for my Chartplotter. Unfortunately, Ovitalmap owes not come with a help menu. Can someone please let me know where I can access proper instructions for using Ovitalmap? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

I have spoken to a few users lately (Eastern Victoria - Australia) but they do not have any doco either. This application appears, and according to at least one of them, to be the long awaited answer to Mac users and mapping for cruising yachts. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

I tried to get this app to work. After much frustration, I gave up. I'm technically competent and ultimately failed when I got to the screen requiring payment, which is in a language I didn't recognize.
I would also be interested in how to get this app to work.

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

Tried it once. Appears to have a lot of functionality, but I never did sort out how to actually use it. Deleted.

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

I use the android version and agree it is far from intuitive. Mostly I just zoom into an area that I am going to and it will download tiles of the image you choose. Google hybrid view is my default but sometimes bing satellite will have a better image.
You can download a defined area by going to edit, select shape and drawing the shape on the screen. Best to adjust the opacity or else you cant see what is under the shape. You must then hit the star button to save the area with a name. This is not obvious and was very frustrating.
Bring up the menu and go to download map. Set the slider to level 12 or 13 to reduce the file size. Select the previously named shape and let it download.
Let me know if you need more details and i will try to do some screenshots.

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

Trying to use ovital on android and can open it up, have data and GPS working but have a blank map screen.
Tried several different things but can't seem to get an actual map to show.
Any pointers from actual users?

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

The map control is in the top right corner, see attachment.
Click on the three layers and the screen shown in the attachment should come up. You might have to change to browse map online.
The numbers under the layer button indicate layer level for the map zoom. 16 is the greatest detail, but 14 is usually enough and saves a lot of data.

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

Thanks for the reply.
Tried that before and tried it again an no luck.
I reckon it has something to do with the pic.
I do that and nothing happens.
I hit cancel and do your see and nothing happens.
Same when I turn off adblock.

Maybe it has something to do with being rooted. I'll check settings there tomorrow.

Oh, and despite what the pic says I am online and google maps works fine and sees the GPS.

It works on my newer Samsung and my old rooted nexus 7. Have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling?

Re: How to use Ovitalmap

If it's not in the store then it hasn't gone through Google's approval process. That means you have to decide if you want to risk the load. I like OvitalMap and I'm comfortable it is not too nefarious, YMMV. Download the app to your phone from the website, then click on the downloaded file to install. If you haven't done this before you will first have to tell the system to allow untrusted apps (in your Settings).

This whole process of loading an unapproved app is called 'sideloading'. Google it or read this. You'll have to decide for yourself if you are comfortable with sideloading.

I think the app breaches googles terms and conditions by downloading Google maps offline, which is why it isnt inthe android store. It is on the apple store though. The oviatmapmwebiste download link doesn't seem to workbut this one does https://m.apksum.com/app/ovitalmap/com.ovital.ovitalmap
