how to check a cable coming into computer

AIS still not working
think it might be the cable coming from the responder to the computer!

but I can't find if the computer sees the incoming cable?

How can I check whether a cable is connected to port COM
or is it called port SERIES
it's that big one with the safety clip

What brand of AIS is it?

Also you could download Opencpn. Its free and yhe AIS hookup is quite simple

Well actually I have Opencpn on another pc and tried the ais/gps
cable on that one and I don't seem to be able to configure that either??
so if simple, then how,,,?
this could help finding wheter the fault is with the pc or with the ais/gps!
ps; it's a FURUNO ais with external GPS
