Re: Google to use Satellites for real time worldwide AIS tracking

We dont need arguments, Just information, I am very interested in this info,

Yes, I am a Dummy with this stuff, I have a GPS Dongle, Its a small square thing, 2 by 2 inches, about 1/4 inch thick, I stick that outside and the other end is a USB that goes into my Laptop, I have a C chart on the Laptop and it puts my position on that map, And I dont have any access to any Server 200 miles from shore,

Whether this Gizmo gives my position to others, I really dont know, But thats why I am on here to find out,

If My cell phone works, My Laptop also works, But I need to be within 12 miles of shore and in reach of a tower,

Re: Google to use Satellites for real time worldwide AIS tracking

I'm sorry but you are absolutely incorrect. Any ship, transmitting AIS, can be "tracked" in real time, GLOBALLY. It has absolutely nothing to do with the internet, nothing to do with logging in or IP addresses and nothing to do with land based receivers until the very last step and how is that relevant anyway?

the user has to install a transmitter, so it's not 'big brother' but once you install an AIS transmitter, google can track its position anywhere on the planet and display it on a map to anyone else who does have a Internet connection.

Who said a ship could or couldn't be tracked?

Someone asked if his boat--a recreational vessel with no AIS capability on board--could be tracked by Google Maps. How do you turn that into a question of whether ships with a real tracking transmitter, AIS, are using it? Or in contact with that system?

As I understand it, AIS tracking via satellite is not a sure thing yet. Some satellites track some ships under some conditions in some locations--but that is far from being a worldwide seamless 24x7 operation. Yet.

You remind me of the story of the three blind men describing an elephant, in very contradictory ways because each one of them has seized on a very different piece of the best.

The OP had Google Maps confused with a standalone self-contained tracking system. It ain't. Case closed. Are there other systems? Sure. No one debated that.

No, your GPS does not transmit anything and has nothing to do with land based servers or towers....

I suggest you start here >> https://www.google.com.au/search?sou...=how+gps+works or maybe get a book or two on the subject.....
