Getting AIS rs-422 Signal Out to the iPad

I keep learning more and more about things I never wanted to know. Things like the difference between rs-422 and rs-232. I thought the NMEA 183 output on my Furuno FA-50 Class B AIS wasn't working, when I couldn't get it to communicate with the Digi Wi-sp I was trying to use to get AIS data out to my IPad.

It may be just the way Furuno does things, and the Class B AIS was intended for NavNet. Had to add a $44 converter fron SIIG but it works .... AIS RS-422 out to the IPad.

I believe the Digi WiSP can support RS-422 directly (has modes for both RS-232 and RS-422 input via configuration). The other solution is to use a DigitalYacht WLN10 which supports one NMEA input and one output. It will accept either RS-232 or RS-422.

I tried but couldn't get the Digi wi-sp to work with rs-422. The converter solved it and I am not unhappy. As a plus I can plug in my handheld gps through the serial cable to the Digi and IPad without any fuss.

Just took a look at the DigitalYacht WLN10 and it looks like it supports only 4800 k - ?? which would not work with most/all ais devices - certainly not the Furuno FA-50.

Interesting about the Digi and RS-422. The WLN10 can support either 4,800 or 38,400 NMEA input.
