Garmin BlueChart Mobile on iPad - Charts?
Several of the recent posts on iPad navigation apps led me to discover that Garmin has announced their Garmin BlueChart Mobile for the iPad. The app is free and will be available this summer (June 2012?). https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=114005.
This has the potential to be very exciting. Does anyone know how Garmin plans to load their BlueChart charts onto the iPad? Will I be able to transfer existing BlueCharts from my desktop computer (e.g., MapSource) or Garmin GPS to the iPad, or will we have to buy (again) from iTunes/App Store? If so, this is a great way to reuse charts that I've already purchased. I'm hoping this is the case and we don't to repurchase.
Anyone seen the Garmin BlueChart Mobile, either development, beta or demo?
Thanks
Don

Capt.Don,
Garmin BlueChart Mobile is still not out yet as of today Nov, 7 2012. Maybe Spring of 2013. Here is a demo that may help you understand it.

Garmin's BlueChart Mobile for iPhone and iPad
Garmin's BlueChart Mobilefor iPhone and iPad has been released today,
November 28 at 9 am EST in the Apple App Store.
There have been lots of CF members asking about it over this last year and I wanted to make sure you all know it’s now available.
You do not need a Garmin chartplotters to use it - it's a stand-alone product all to itself.
It's one of the significant boating app that has been released for iOS.
If you have an iPhone or an iPad, this is the product to buy
If you don't have an iPad, BlueChart Mobile is more than enough reason to buy one (get a
cellular, 32 GB, latest model, iPad 4th gen).
It's hard to find the new app in iTunes - not sure why. But go to
this link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garmin-bluechart-mobile/id523635526#
And click on "View in iTunes". The app is free - charts are added for
very low prices.

Garmin Bluecharts Mobile uses BlueChart g2 marine cartography
Featuring data from Explorer Charts for the Bahamas
Features detailed coverage from Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, to the Dominican Republic, including the Bahamian islands of Great Exuma, Great Inagua, Mayaguana, and many others. Also includes detailed coverage of the Jamaican, Haitian, and Dominican coasts in their entirety, the easternmost quarter of Cuba, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Re: Garmin BlueChart Mobile on iPad - Charts?
Garmin have just announced their iPad app. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garm...le/id523635526
The app is free, but they charge for the maps. It seems to me that they have done things backwards. I like to update charts twice a year to keep current, but this way it is going to be expensive. I would have been much better if Garmin had charged for the app, then provided the maps for free. InavX does it this way. Lets face it, regardless which company is selling the charts, in the US the data originates with NOAA (or the COE) anyway.

And you don't even need to buy the charts!!!
It's got it's own basic map so if you have a plotter, or charts on PC etc, this one could be good as an emergency backup even without the detailed charts.
Just plug in your waypoints.
Works with Active Captain too.
So as a free download its a goodie

Re: Garmin BlueChart Mobile on iPad - Charts?
If you have purchased the "North America v2012.5" charts, can you tell me if the coverage includes Canadian charts or just NOAA? I am specifically interested in the Canadian Great Lakes, and the Canadian Maritimes. In addition, can someone confirm that all of Lake Superior and Lake Huron is included. In the coverage mini-map it appears coverage may stop at the US/Canadian boarder.

Re: Garmin's BlueChart Mobile for iPhone and iPad
just downloaded it...starting to play with it, really excited -- we're about to put electronics in our new boat, hoping eventually I'll be able to view depth/radar/etc. over the network on it

You would have to buy the Garmin Marine Wi-Fi Adapter Kit $199 to have it all talk wirelessly together .

Re: Garmin BlueChart Mobile on iPad - Charts?
Wait!!!
Wait a sec. It's only planning software.
You can't activate a route. Only plan them and follow them.... Even if you spend the money on the charts.
Damn waste of money then as Navionics is the same price.... And actually navigates.
Absolute pity because the program functions nicely, zooms and scrolls very quickly and smoothly....
Cotemar, can you check yours, you bought the charts? Can you activate a route?
