Yes, you are correct that you cannot Navigate or Activate your route
Speed over ground and GPS heading are always displayed on the task bar on the bottom of the iPad display

It would be nice if a subset were selected and downloaded.

The ActiveCaptain download to Garmin's BlueChart Mobile is all or nothing

That's very kind of you Exile & CMAC. Could I ask you to zoom in deeply at 48 25.90 N by 89 12.80 W. is there a detail of a marina?

De Nada ("you're welcome" or "it was nothing"), as we say out here in Nuevo Mexico. Hope the app works out for you should you decide to buy it.

Re: Garmin's BlueChart Mobile for iPhone and iPad
A Nice upgrade would be to use e-mail or and SD memory card to move routes between devices instead of buying a Garmin Marine Wi-Fi Adapter Kit $199.
I put all my routes and waypoints in my Garmin GPSMAP 5208 using and SD memory card.
I should be able to put those same routes and waypoints in my BlueChart Mobile device using the same SD memory card?

There is an SD adapter for iPad, but I am not sure you would be able to access it from this app.

Tried that. BlueChart Mobile does not see the SD memory card plugged into the iPad

Re: Garmin's BlueChart Mobile for iPhone and iPad
Based on what I read here I downloaded GBCM and bought the North America 2012.5. I installed all the Caribbean tiles. Lo and behold, I discover that I and several hundred other boats have been on dry land all summer. Little did I know that I didn't really have to dinghy to shore, all I had to do was get out and walk. Think of all the fuel I could have saved...
All kidding aside, the chart just ends about five nm downriver from Fronteras, on the Rio Dulce in Guatemala. Below that it's not bad stuff, but there is a very navigable waterway here. I wrote to Garmin to ask about the problem, and here is the reply:
"Dear Charles Freeman,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this today. Unfortunately, the Bluechart Mobile maps do not cover rivers, only coastal charts. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Please let me know if there is anything else I may further assist you with.
With Best Regards,

I intend to respond that perhaps they should focus on navigable waterways, not just bathed in salt. But, caveat emptor. FWIW the Raymarine C-MAP cartridge covers the area just fine.

A couple people have talked about having the "GPS iPad". I was at the apple store today and confirmed with them that there is no true GPS iPad. There is only a GPS assisted model. Without a wireless or cellular signal there is no GPS location function. Unlike a real GPS chip that will find your location by satellite even when there is no wireless or cellular. To me that eliminates the iPad.
Am I wrong?

See the numerous threads. As I understand it, the assisted means that the cellular network helps pinpoint in sattelite weak spots, but does work on its own.

I went round and round with the apple guys. They were quite sure the GPS needed a wireless or cellular signal to work.
