Re: Garmin's BlueChart Mobile for iPhone and iPad
All they state is that the North America v2012.5 Chart includes both Canadian Coasts

All the weather stuff (reg. & premium) and Active Capt. requires an internet connection. Charts & tides, along with the boat's position obviously, are always there. Next question is whether XM weather will appear from Garmin 4208 plotter with wi-fi unit.

ActiveCaptain data is on the iPad or IPhone.
No internet connection required

So, I take it no one has invested in the maps, yet?

My mistake -- tks. I suppose internet access would only then be necessary for updating?

Yes, I know. I've read what info they make available. It also says it includes the Great Lakes, but their coverage map shows that this is not true. Northern L. Superior is clearly not inside the coverage zone. Possibly northern Huron as well. Last I heard these are part of the Great Lakes...
I'm hoping it's simply an error in the coverage graphic, but surely I shouldn't have to spend $45 to answer this simple question.
Again, if anyone purchases either North American packages, do me a favour and zoom into Thunder Bay. Tell me what you see.

Yes, I have. They are labeled and appear to be identical to the latest version I recently installed on my 4208. They also seem to load, zoom, etc. faster than on the plotter. As previously mentioned, this means they should be the Explorer charts for the Bahamas.

Can you go that extra step that distinguishes planning from navigation with the charts?

Sorry,
Yes I can explain.
Plan
Follow
Navigate
Plan - means to put waypoints at locations and connect them with lines to make routes
Follow - means your iPad with gps will show your boats location and let you follow the routes that you made, so you know exactly where you are and can stay on your route and also know what the depth of the water is below your boat from the charts. You have to steer or adjust your autopilot manually
With Garmin's BlueChart Mobile you can Plan and Follow a Route that you have made
Navigate - means that not only are you following a route, but it will give you real time data, ETA, Dist. to end, Bearing to waypoint you name it.
In some cases you can drive your autopilot with the data

I've purchased the $30 US Coastal mapping and it includes all of the Great Lakes. Goes as far north as "Vert" & "Condon" Islands in the upper reaches of L. Superior, i.e. the smallish body of water NW of Simpson Island. I'm not familiar with the area and just reporting what I'm seeing on the chart. Let me know if you want me to confirm any other places, waypts., etc.
Hope this helps.

I think we've determined that the app does not navigate. Sure, your position will be displayed on the chart, along with your route. There does not appear to be an activate route or the speed, distance, xte,.... display found on chartplotters or other nav apps.

Re: Garmin's BlueChart Mobile for iPhone and iPad
Regarding Active Captain - I have not (yet) enabled this feature on Garmin BlueChart Mobile. With Navimatics, the entire ActiveCaptain database was downloaded to my smartphone/tablet. The download was huge and needed 83MB (I deleted and reinstalled Navimatics). I personally don't need their entire world community database just to display nearby POIs. It would be nice if a subset were selected and downloaded.
