Re: Florida to Maine Offshore?

I have made the Miami to Southern New England trip outside single handed on three occasions. Ones approach is based on ones objectives. If getting there fast is important, then ones tactics are quite different than if speed of arrival is not important.

As the Gulf Stream comes as close as 10 miles or less from Miami and touches Palm Beach getting the weather right on departure is critical. If you are considering a straight shot non-stop around Hatteras, then what I do is identify the "decision point" at which point I must decide between continuing around Hatteras or going into Beaufort to wait for favorable weather. The weather forecast makes that decision for me. If one gets a favorable weather report and continues around Hatteras, then straight off you go to the Cape Cod Canal.

The other option is a leisurely trip north with stops in interesting and charming places. I've enjoyed Fernandina and Beaufort, NC and Cape May, and Charleston in particular was a real delight. One can go north by making hops of about 36 hours or less which gives one time to "smell the roses".

Either way I wish the a wonderful adventure.
