I don't understand the value of doing a log only once every 12 hrs?
I have a list of things to be checked every hour by the person on watch
Why not log those hourly checks as a verification along with the Standard sailing and motorsailing reports at the top of the hour?
It provides the next watch keeper with data and an official written handover of any concerns about the
equipment.
I like to manage it so that the person who comes on watch talks to the person being relieved about any concerns....
Then .....the new person does the checklist BEFORE they relieve at the
helm as watchkeeper.
That way, if you have a night traffic situation around change of watch, the new guy, perhaps still sleepy, does the
safety checks and fills in the log first before taking over.
That 10-15 minute overlap doing the checks and log catches a lot of mistakes
